R&B crooner Usher will take the stage with Young Jeezy for a live
performance of his #1 hit, "Love In This Club."
Usher's Phone Interview With TeenMusic
Date: May 6, 2008
TeenMusic: What is your favorite song on this new album and why?
Usher: My favorite thing that I did on this album are the Interludes. I
did an interlude to my son that I call "Pray for You." One of my greatest
written pieces of work in my life. It's really incredible.
TeenMusic: I just wondered if you had any film projects in the works. Are
you still putting acting on the backburner or are you thinking about
coming back to the screen?
Usher: I'm still trying to manage a way to bring both of them together,
maybe in a theatrical piece someday. Nothing is on the horizon. But as
long as I keep putting feelers like that out, I'm pretty sure somebody's
going to approach me. I really did enjoy my time on Broadway [in
"Chicago"]. So it kind of spoiled me. I'm really looking for that musical
or that song-and-dance piece that I could put together.
TeenMusic: You've grown a lot in your personal life since the last album.
How does maturing affect...
Usher: [My] Sex appeal? I think that wisdom is sexy. I think that growth
is sexy. I think that confidence, which is growth, and being comfortable
in your skin is all sexy, but I (don't) want to relate all that to sexy
because that's part of my mission, to kind of change what that view of
attractive is.
TeenMusic: So you feel that you are more comfortable and confident now?
Usher: In time, you know, we grow older, we grow wiser, we grow smarter,
we're better. And I feel like, I'm becoming more well seasoned, although I
don't have my salt-and-pepper hair. I have that in life, and my life
experiences speak to it. Of course there's a big difference, because I'm
balancing a few things. One, you know, my personal life, and then, two my
business responsibilities. Finding the balance is going to be hard, but I
love it and I'm dedicated to making sure that this project is a success no
matter what.
TeenMusic: What is your favorite collaboration on this new album?
Usher: My favorite collaboration in the making of this album, I have to
split it two ways; one, the queen, Beyonce and Lil Wayne on part two of
"Love in this Club." And the other is "Best Thing" with Jay-Z. Everybody's
been talking about his marriage and my marriage and that big step that I
think we both took, or did we? I know I did. But I think that serves to be
a really great, meaningful duet, so both of those.
TeenMusic: Who else in the industry do you want to work with?
Usher: I'd like to do something with Michael Buble. I'd like to do
something with Harry Connick, Jr., possibly. I'd like to do something with
Tim McGraw. I'd like to do something with Justin Timberlake. I'd like to
do something with Gwen Stefani. And that's just to name a few. You know,
of course, I have the honor to now say that I worked on a record with
Beyonce, but I'd like to do it again with her and it not be kind of
relative to a remix.
TeenMusic: Why do you want to collaborate with Justin?
Usher: I honestly feel like Justin is kind of the equivalent of me white,
and I am the equivalent of what he could be black. I know that sounds
crazy, but, you know, I hear that comparison all the time. So I think if
we ever came together there would be no color barrier. It would just be
two guys, making an incredible record, both with individual celebrity
across the board. I think that it would be a very musical record because
Justin is three-dimensional. He's not just a performer. He's also a
musician and a writer and a great composer. And the same with me, you
know, in terms of my creative ideas and his; collaboratively, I think that
we would do something very, very incredible.
TeenMusic: Could be awesome. Which songs on the new CD are the most
personal to you?
Usher: All of the songs, together, collaboratively, make up the chapters
of a great book, of a great journey. You know, with all great novels,
books, there is a beginning, a middle and an end. But the plot has to be
something of substance and value. And that topic is love. So, you know,
I'd have to say the entire album. Of course, it's called "Here I Stand".
So it's personal.
TeenMusic: You've got acting, you've got singing, you've got your
fragrance line. What else is next? What other things would you like to
sort of dip into?
Usher: Oh, man. I think that the greatest of all of them is being the
coolest dad in the world. You know, I want to make sure that I'm proud of
the father that I am to my child. That would be the most rewarding out of
all of them, you know?
TeenMusic: Are there any themes on the album that you want to get across?
Usher: There is a topic of life, love, decisions, choices that are made,
repercussions, the reality of the journey of life, of manhood. Here you
have before you a young man, who stepped into true manhood, not only
because of my child but also because of the decisions that I made in the
span of two years. It was all of the things that happened before that led
up to this brilliant moment. Now I'm able to voice, how I feel about
certain things and, allow myself to be vulnerable in exposing certain
things through my music.
TeenMusic: You started in the business pretty young. There are a lot of
great young artists in the game now; Rihanna, Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks.
Do you have any words of advice for those artists coming up and what they
can do to stay on a path like you?
Usher: I would say, one, you got to stick around. You got to continue to
work, grind, to get it, and that's obvious, you know, judging from, how
much you see them and how much they work. But I think, just really
creating an expectation for yourself every day. And that expectation is to
win, to do something positive, to give great work to the community of
music, of artistry and entertainment.
TeenMusic: What do you really think about people comparing young
performers like Chris Brown to you? They talk about Ne-Yo and all these
other people coming up in the game right now.
Usher: You know what? I think the same comparison was drawn to a legendary
artist when I came up, and now I've grown to be the comparison. So I'm
very, very proud of that. And I only hope that, in time, they'll grow to
have the same. It's a matter of sustaining. You really have to be relevant
in this time. You have to continue to be innovative and come up with
creative ideas. The fans keep you there. I'm very happy, for the
comparison because of the fact that, when I was coming up, they compared
me to Michael. They compared me to Bobby. They even said Elvis at one
time; a great compliment.
TeenMusic: We heard that Jermaine Dupri claimed that your second single
was going to be entitled "Moving Mountains." Is that true?
Usher: That is true. The second single for the album is "Moving
Mountains." It was produced by Tricky Stewart, well, Redzone. And it was
written by Dream. And the video has been shot by the Brothers Strauss. It
is to be delivered very soon. I can't give you a date. But it is the
second single.
TeenMusic: I assume you're going to be touring for the album, and I was
wondering, to you, what's great about touring and what really sucks about
it?
Usher: What sucks about it is when it's over. The greatest part about it
is when you're doing it.
TeenMusic: So, you like touring. Do you go around when you're on the road
and check out the towns you're in, or do you just have to hide?
Usher: For the most part I like to go down and touch the people. You know,
we either do like a private party in the markets. If we don't do that,
then, we go to the radio stations and the local malls. I try to have a
sense of normalcy in the midst of what I'm doing. You know, especially,
seeing as how I'll be traveling with my family a lot of times. I want to
make sure that they enjoy everywhere we go and that we have a little time.
Of course, I have my obligations and responsibilities, so I get those out
of the way, but then I always try to make some time to have a good time.
TeenMusic: When you are touring, are there any pre-performance rituals or
anything you need when you perform?
Usher: Anything that's a must-have? It's tea. I must have tea when I
perform. It's an age-old ritual and M&Ms.
TeenMusic: You must have felt some pressure to make this album a success.
What was most difficult about the process for you?
Usher: The hardest part, honestly, was the secrecy, you know, because I
worked on a lot of songs. And going through the trial and elimination
process of how I would tell this story was kind of difficult. But, you
know, I don't think it's going to add any pressure. I think that it's just
time. The people have been really asking for it. There's been a heavy
callout for this record. I've been listening to it for like the last, I'd
say you know, eight months. So I'm ready and ready to shock the world.
TeenMusic: Can you talk about your perfume line and how designing that is
different from the music process for you?
Usher: Well, being a part of the process for the making of the fragrance
is very tedious. It's time consuming. It is a matter of, your senses and
what you're attracted to and what things are your favorite. I was able to
be creative in a different way but analytical at the same. You find an
emotion that you can tie to the senses, but you want to make sure that, in
the end, that all of your senses are peaking when you smell whatever it is
that you've smelled. You think of a place. You think of a feeling. You
feel an attraction that comes to you. It was very different, but very
intriguing. And I look forward to doing it again and again!
TeenMusic: It seems that you almost have a little bit of a formula. You
kicked off "Confessions" with the club banger, "Yeah!" and then came the
more serious album behind it. And now we have "Love in This Club." So, is
that a strategy or that's just how things sort of worked out?
Usher: Well, it was twofold. One, it is strategic in a way, because you
want to make a record that is relative to what I think the pace of life is
and the beat of life is. What I'm doing by having "Love in this Club" as
my first single is I'm taking you to the beginning of the journey that I'm
getting ready to take you on, the story of my life, the story of the guy
who was the hustler and a player in the club then making his way through a
lifetime. And life will see you through many seasons and high peaks and
low valleys and that's what the entire project is all about.
TeenMusic: What's the biggest difference you've seen in the music industry
from when you started almost 15 years ago?
Usher: The biggest difference? Digital downloads. You know, unfortunately,
it wasn't so easy to trade files. You didn't have to worry about your
music getting out there. This industry has changed. The music, to an
extent, has kind of found its way towards becoming more urban. I think I'm
very happy with where the music has taken us. Music is a universal
language, and it can come from any different direction. You never know
what it's going to be.
TeenMusic: There's some really fun choreography on the "Love in the Club"
video. Did you come up with any of that? Or how important is choreography
to you?
Usher: No, one of my dancers and my choreographer, Todd Sams, were the
choreographers for the piece. I really wanted to create something that was
attitude, was tricky, quick. I didn't want to make an entire video full of
dance. I always try to keep you on your toes, keep it innovative. I like
to give you a performance that crescendos, that just doesn't come at you
100 percent dance, one thing. It's all about layers with me.
TeenMusic: How do you manage to juggle all your ventures; music, film,
your New Look Foundation, sports team, fragrance line etc.?
Usher: With a great team and a strategic plan, you can get it all done.
It's like time management, you know. You have a certain amount of time to
work on movies. You have a certain amount of time to work on music. You
have a certain amount of time to give your attention to your business
efforts as well as that ongoing time that you implement into everything
that you're doing, which is called your philanthropic work. Every time
that I do something, I'm thinking of my organization, of New Look. But
it's really just time management, having a great team behind you to help
to lead you and guide you in the right direction, help to grow businesses.
TeenMusic: What would you say makes for a successful relationship?
Usher: Communication, the ability to listen before you speak. It really
comes down to communication, honestly, more than anything, understanding
each other's love languages and knowing what buttons to push and what
buttons to not push, knowing when to let it ride. You have to know that
there's going to be tons and tons of arguments and differences in life, so
you have to understand what matters. And ultimately, at the end of the
day, it should be that both of you are happy and love each other.

Usher: London, Here I Come | May 27: R U
Ready?
Source: The Sun (UK) Date: May 5, 2008
Usher is due to arrive in the UK tomorrow to promote new album Here I
Stand.
If you’re an Usher fan and want to meet him, I’d start hitting London’s
clubs.
Despite him marrying and becoming a dad last year, the singer has no
intention of slowing his party lifestyle while he’s over here.
A source says: "Usher has requested a list of London’s top hotspots for
him and his 30-strong entourage. And he’ll also be throwing a huge
celebrity party to launch the record."

Finally, there's one celebrity who refuses to cash in on parenthood by
selling baby pictures to a magazine. "In no way would I ever pimp out my
child for money," Usher told Page Six.
The pop singer - upset by rumors he was trying to sell photos of his
infant son, Usher Raymond V, and eager to defend his wife, Tameka, and his
upcoming album, "Here I Stand" - wants to set the record straight.
"I am livid that people talk about my child," Usher told us. In fact, he
has posed - for free - with his son for an "incredible" Father's Day cover
for Essence magazine.
"What makes you a man more than being a father to your child? I recognize
I gave anonymity away when I became an artist, but to have people try to
paint a horrible picture of what's so beautiful - it's obvious someone is
trying to stop something so beautiful."
As for embattled spouse Tameka - who has been blamed for the firing of
most of Usher's music team, for not getting along with his mother,
Jonnetta Patton, and for being jealous of other women - Usher says, just
get over it.
"I stand by her as a man loving my wife and being there for my child . . .
Opinions are like [bleep]holes. Everybody's got one. What I will say is,
this is my wife and I would hope that [people] would respect my wife and
my marriage and who I have chosen to spend my life with."
Regarding talk that his album underwhelmed a few critics, Usher fumed, "It
was just finished on Friday! And no one but a few international
journalists have heard it yet. Everybody responded very well to it.
"They noted that it was very courageous to take this direction in my music
. . . They called it timeless."
In addition to Essence, Usher will grace the covers of Entertainment
Weekly and Vibe and has already booked a coveted slot on "Saturday Night
Live."
Our boy—ahem, our man—Usher, was in New York recently and Parlour got the chance
to kick it with the triple-threat chiseled entertainer. Don’t even try escaping
his single “Love In This Club,” and his album, Here I Stand, hits shelves May
27th. With wall-to-wall club joints and slow jams made for quickies, this latest
disc should knock as hard as its 2004 predecessor Confessions. But there’s a
more mature Usher at its helm. It’s still the same Ursh who used to drop his
pants during shows, except he’s married now (for which he’s attracted some hate)
and just had his first child, Usher Raymond IV. Along with addressing the
haters, Usher also let Parlour in on the mind state of a married man and how
he’s getting better with age.
Usher: I need you to miss me [he smiles]. If I stay in your face all the time
you’ll get tired of seeing me. I went to Broadway (Chicago, the musical), did a
movie. I had a label and still do. But when I’m in another area of entertainment
I’m missing what I do the most. So I’ll be on stage playing Billy Flynn but
singing records that I came up with or doing new dance choreography. Or if I’m
on the set and supposed to be in character, I’m somewhere off in the corner
singing and dancing.
Parlour: How has your marriage and fatherhood affected your music?
Usher: This album, to me, is a staple in time. I like to make music about where I
am, but I also try to make records that will be like soundtracks to life. So
that people will be able to relate to them, maybe one day grow from them, learn,
love from ‘em. This one particularly is more special than all of the others. I
know it sounds cliché to say that! But honestly it’s the pivotal moment for me
as an artist, as well as a husband in a way, and a father. These are all new
journeys for me, the most meaningful, because they’re the most rewarding.
Parlour: How exactly have you grown?
Usher: The knowledge that rests in the mistakes slowly but surely become wisdom, so
that’s really the process that I’m going through as a man. Where I stand as a
husband, as a father, as an individual, as a businessman, is all a testimony to
what I’ve been through and where I’ve been.
Parlour: How does “Love in This Club” fit into that?
Usher: “Love in This Club” is the position that I was in about two years ago and as
a result of having that record, there’s a series of events that will happen.
Parlour: Talk about the title track, “Here I Stand.” I heard some things about it…
Usher: It’s an intimate conversation that a young man has with his woman when he
says, “I know it’s hard for you to believe that you’re the only one for me.”
This is the set-up before a man says, “I’m standing here with you.”
Parlour: And some of the other tracks?
Usher: “Something Special” is about the feeling of finding love for the first time.
When you finally decide to really take a relationship to the next level and be
serious it’s something that you don’t back away from. Even if you try to escape
it, you can’t find a way to get out of it. It’s got to be something special. And
a lot of times when you find that thing, other people may not believe in it.
Other people may be against it. Other people may not understand it. But it’s you
and that person against the world, and that’s really the attitude and the
position you have to take.
Parlour: Which song do you identify with the most?
Usher: Well, I identify with all of the records to be honest with you. But “Before I
Met You” is one of the songs that I instantly identify with. I’ll just tell you
some of the hook: “I was a hustler and a player before I met you. I tricked a
little something, hit a little something before I met you. How you made a
difference, what I been missing, I got my life together and I’ll thank you
forever. I really used to go all out before I met you. Had a new one every night
and sometimes I had two. But all of that done changed, my games, my frame of
mind you got it right and I’ll love you for life.” It’s what I think a young man
is, before he decides to become a real man.
Parlour: Last words?
Usher: I love my son and I love my wife and they’re the supporting foundation of
what I’m doing. I love my fans—I thank y’all so, so much for coming back to the
party with me. For all you haters, sorry we back on top. [Laughs] For those of
you that doubted it for a minute I’m really sorry for you, but this is
definitely going to be a reward for those who’ve been waiting, rooting and
supporting and I’m not gon’ let you down. I promise.

& Usher's Buble Song
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Source: M&C Date: April 30, 2008
Usher wants to work with Michael Buble. The R&B star is desperate to team up
with the Canadian jazz artist on his new album 'Here I Stand' and has even
written a song for them to perform together.
He said: "I would love to perform my track 'Forever Young' with Michael Buble. I
actually wrote that song with the intention of him and me doing it together."
The 'Love in This Club' singer is also keen to collaborate with US
singer-songwriter John Mayer.
Usher added: "I would like to do something with John Mayer on one of my songs
'Something Special' which is on my new album. I would love him to play the
guitar and sing with me on that."
The 29-year-old star, who has recorded a track with Ne-Yo for his new LP,
insists he is happy his 18-year-old chart rival Chris Brown has enjoyed such
success.
Usher explained: "All of this new energy is great for the industry. Chris is the
guy who dances and sings, which is a lot like I do and did as a young artist. If
time serves us correctly, and artists continue to better themselves, then
hopefully he will follow the same path that I did."
Usher: Standing Tall
Source: Essence Date: April 28, 2008
The Prince of Pop confesses that leaving the clubs behind to start a
family has influenced his new music for the better.
Let’s face it: Usher probably will never know what it means to have a
dream deferred. Since he was a pubescent teen, the ATL crooner has only
been steeped in reality — singing and dancing toward his goals seemingly
effortlessly. Now, after an award-winning career and four-year hiatus, the
megastar and family man gears up for his fifth musical offering, Here I
Stand, the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2004’s kiss-and-tell breakout
Confessions.
"I’m back on the scene and ready to do it all over again. This is going to
be an incredible journey," the chart-topper prophesizes. "It is a classic
and should be remembered 20 years from now. I’m ready to shock the world."
Yet, his loyalists were not at all surprised to learn that the pop phenom’s bounce-heavy, party starter "Love In This Club" featuring Atlanta
rapper Young Jeezy had a rapid-fire ascension on Billboard’s music charts.
Still as his energy surges with talks of his latest project, the
anticipation hardly the cause of this first-time dad’s adrenalin rush.
He’s as busy as the fancy footwork he serves up on the dance floor,
infiltrating the silver screen (In The Mix, She’s All That, Light It Up),
The Great White Way (Chicago), the basketball court (he’s co-owner of the
NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers) and as a philanthropist (and founder of New
Look Organization, an Atlanta-based nonprofit which provides youth with a
new outlook on life through education and real-world experience). But
lately nothing has kept him more engaged than fatherhood and his family.
"My mother had dinner at our house, and all my family came in from all
over. Some were newly married; some had babies," Usher told ESSENCE back
in 2005. "I was like, "Wow, where have I been? Have I missed everything?"
That was a wake-up call. One of my biggest flaws is not allocating time
properly to my family, because of my artistic obligation, my journey."
Moving forward, Usher heeded his call as a husband to his wife Tameka
Foster. Last September, the two got hitched and in November they welcomed
their first child together, Usher Raymond V.
Undoubtedly, his personal experiences in life and love are the blueprint
for his lyrical content.
"My first single takes you back to the beginning of my life
story--[reintroducing] the guy who wanted to hustle and play in the club
but eventually making his journey to lifetime" he says. "Life will take
you through high and low valleys, give you seasons—rain and shine.
Ultimately, the end of this story leads to a lifetime [fulfilled]. That’s
what this entire project is all about."
Usher’s favorite part of his new album is an interlude dedicated to his
son entitled, "Pray For You," and he looks forward to the day when his
namesake will listen to the new tribute.
"I modeled this one as an example for my son who will understand someday
that when you stand for what’s right, regardless of what anyone else’s
opinion may be, you are right," he says. "No man should judge another for
what he feels and stands for. Do you understand what I stand for?"
For those of us who don't, we’ll get a hint of Usher's ideology when he
drops his melodic diary on May 27.
Also: Just last week, Jermaine leaked footage
online, in which Jay-Z paid a visit to the studio after the Atlanta stop
of the Heart of the City Tour. Jay, Usher, Dupri and Anthony Hamilton were
seen laughing it up and promising a hit record.
"It's a Jay-Z and Usher record produced by me," the mogul said. "It's
about their lives right now. They talk about their past relationships and
how they are where they are now."
"The Best Thing" will be featured on Usher's May 27 release, Here I Stand.
"It's cool," the producer said. "They not really sappy. It's not a sappy
song. Usher's album is more about teaching men [that] at some point, you
gotta grow up. And growing up is respecting a woman and having a woman in
your life and taking care of your woman. That's his definition of growing
up. A lot of other n---as have a different definition. That's his
definition of becoming a man, taking care of home. This song is kinda like
that. It's a responsible type of record. When that girl you settled down
with, she leaves you. You realize you lost the best thing that ever
happened to you.
"The hardest part about this Usher album is that I'm not involved in the
record-company process," he added. "This is the first album where we're
not in charge of who picks the singles. So I can't speak on that part of
it. I would hope it would be the next single. It feels like it should be.
Usher left the studio saying it was the next single. But he also told
y'all weeks ago [that] 'Moving Mountains' was the next single. Lyric-wise,
hearing Jay-Z say what he's saying and Usher saying what he's saying,
people wanna hear this. I could tell you that. N---as wanna hear that."
Kicking off their night at Katsuya Hollywood, the duo chatted away over
dinner at a table policed by two bodyguards. Following the meal, the music
moguls headed to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where the night before
Jay-Z hosted a private dinner and afterparty, joined by his wife, Beyoncé.
UBG First: Usher Presents.. Here I Stand!
Here I Stand in
stores May 27th, raises the stakes and is the next chapter in this ongoing
story of Usher's coming of age.
Here I Stand tells a story of growth; triumphant, reflective, somewhat
defiant, and marks a new period in Usher's life and creative expression.
Through his music, Usher illustrates the tension and challenges of
balancing a very public life with private decisions; of being a sex symbol
and entertainer with being a faithful husband and father.
Although the market has changed dramatically since Usher's last release,
there is a massive anticipation for his return, demonstrated by the
groundbreaking one week jump of Love In This Club from #51 to #1 on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart. The follow up single Moving
Mountains, provides an opportunity for multiple format single success
across pop, rhythm and urban radio.
Usher once again is ready to take top spot & give his fans what he has
been giving them from day one, great music!
Usher will perform at this years BET Awards and will grace next months
cover issue of VIBE Magazine.
"I will say this and I know it’s gonna be everywhere. Lord, Tameka gonna
be trying to fight people. But honestly I will say, although Marlon is
the one that got away, Usher is the one that I truly did love. Like that
was truly my first adult love. I love him very much and I will always
love him. I don’t know how you love someone that deeply and just stop
loving them. I’m not in love with him anymore but I can’t say that I
don’t love him anymore. And of course I do want him to be happy and all
but me and him had what I never had in any of my other relationships,
and that was chemistry. Even in that picture that you have up. Any
picture that you see with the two of us, you see it. It’s just there! I
could be standing next to him til this day and people will be like
“Wow”. It’s not that you are wondering if we are back together again,
it’s just that we look like we just go together. So unfortunately we
couldn’t get all the other stuff right and I think a lot of it had to do
with timing. For me I had just come out of an off and on 10 year
relationship with Dallas and as a female to female you understand that
when you get out of those crazy relationships you kind’ve get this “I’m
strong and I’m not gonna let anyone in."
Polow Da Don Said He "Saved" Usher's Career
"If a ten-year-old can make 'Love in This Club' and save Usher's career
and make black women want to fuck him again, after they was done with him
for getting married, then shit he's a genius just like me,"
Polow said in a
recent interview with SOHH.
In the short video, an unidentified young man plays a snippet of "Love in
This Club," then demonstrates two presets from Apple's GarageBand
program which sound nearly identical to the track -- instantly threatening
the credibility of one of hip-hop's hottest producers.
Wow, I didn't know that Polow Da Don was responsible for "saving" Usher's
career. That was a pretty cocky statement. I think Usher is more than
capable of restoring his own career. IMO -Erika
Are you wondering why no one has seen photos of Usher's new son Usher IV
lately?
Well MediaTakeOut.com has learned why. According to an insider at
Essence magazine, Tameka Foster is asking for $2M for the first photos of
her new child.
The insider told MediaTakeOut.com, "[Tameka] has been actively negotiating
to get top dollar for the photos. Usually we deal with agencies or
lawyers, but Tameka's handling it herself - and she's definitely playing
hardball."
Can't hate on Tameka for wanting to get that paper. And don't be fooled
y'all - Essence definitely has the money to pay. You may not know this,
but a while back Essence was bought out - now it's owned by the same
company that owns CNN, People Magazine and TMZ.com. Hmmmm .... maybe
that's why the folk over at Essence never credit us for our reporting -
