Usher Raymond was born October 14, 1978 in Dallas, Texas. At an early age his family moved to Chattanooga, Tenn. He is oldest son of Usher Raymond III and Jonnetta Patton and has a young brother named James. His stepfather was Terry Patton. Jonnetta divorce when Terry told her to choose him or Usher's career. Jonnetta still praises Terry and views the marriage as a good one. The family moved to Atlanta when he was 12 years old and that is where he started entering talent shows. Eventually he made it on Star Search and when Usher was 14 he was spotted at a talent show by a record exec. from LaFace Records. The company signed the young singer while he was still in high school.

In 1994 Usher released his first album, Usher which was executive produced by P. Diddy (Puff Daddy) The album gave Usher his first top 10 hit with "Think Of You". It wasn't long until Coca-Cola came knocking a year later and snagged him to do a jingle for the holidays. He also teamed up with singer Monica on her album for a remake of Let's Straighten It Out.

After graduating high school in 1997, Usher released his second album titled My Way. His first single You Make Me Wanna became a huge hit and was later nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance. Usher also had a second top 10 hit with his song Nice and Slow. In 1998 Janet Jackson grabbed him as an opening act for her Velvet Rope Tour.
